How do witness phones earn rewards?

Witness phones earn rewards in tMATRA by submitting valid TEE-attested probe results to the Materios partner chain. The committee verifies each probe’s TEE attestation signature and probe payload, and rewards are distributed proportionally to the volume and quality of accepted submissions. Bad-faith submissions (replayed probes, invalid TEE quotes, contradictory results) are slashable.

What does TEE-attestation mean?

TEE attestation is a hardware-rooted cryptographic proof that a specific piece of code ran inside a Trusted Execution Environment on a specific device. The Witness Network uses TEE attestation to prove that probe results came from an unmodified probe binary running inside the phone’s secure enclave — not from a script faking the result. Without TEE attestation, "decentralized monitoring" is just a Sybil farm.

How do I run a witness phone?

Install the Witness Network app on a TEE-capable Android handset (Pixel 6 or later, Samsung Galaxy S22 or later, and most flagship devices with StrongBox / TrustZone support). Register the device key on Materios, stake a small tMATRA bond, and start submitting probes. Rewards accrue automatically as the committee certifies your submissions.

What’s the difference between Witness Network and uptime monitors like Pingdom?

Pingdom, UptimeRobot, and Datadog Synthetics are centralized — you trust the vendor’s data centers to faithfully report your uptime. The Witness Network is decentralized and cryptographically verifiable: probes come from a global mesh of independent witness phones, results are TEE-attested at the hardware level, and the final uptime proof anchors to Cardano L1. Anyone (regulator, customer, court) can verify the proof without trusting Flux Point Studios or the operator.

Does Witness Network support TLS-CT?

Yes. Witness phones can run TLS Certificate Transparency probes that record the certificate chain served by an endpoint at probe time. This catches misissued certificates, BGP hijacks, and TLS MITM attacks — the kind of supply-chain failures that traditional uptime monitors miss because they only check HTTP status codes.

Is the data on-chain?

Probe results are committee-certified on the Materios partner chain in ~12 seconds and batched into Cardano L1 hourly under metadata label 8746. Only cryptographic hashes, TEE attestation quotes, and probe metadata are stored on-chain — never raw response bodies or sensitive payloads. Verification is fully public: anyone can replay the inclusion proof using only the receipt ID.

Phone's KeyMint generates an attested ECDSA P-256 key inside ARM TrustZone. Each probe payload (URL, status, body hash, timestamp) is signed by that key. The key never leaves hardware.

Committee attests

The Materios M-of-N committee independently verifies each probe signature, deduplicates against the on-chain attestor registry, and emits a TeeAttestation::EvidenceVerified event.

Cardano anchors

Every hour the chain's Merkle root is committed to Cardano L1 under metadata label 8746. Anyone can replay the proof, verify the signatures, and confirm the receipts without trusting us.
